Lady Thunder Ready To Open The 2021-22 Season

Manhattan, Kan.

The Manhattan Christian Lady Thunder are ready to dive into the 2021-22 season, opening up play at home with the Thunder Invitational August 27 & 28. With a solid returning group, head coach Lauren Sanders is motivated heading into her 17th season. Last season, MCC put together a 16-3 overall record, were Midwest Christian College Conference Regular Season and Tournament Champions.

“The team is committed and excited to get to work and continue building on our success from last year. We are young but loaded with potential that will be tested this season” stated Coach Sanders. With the bulk of the ladies returning, Sanders did bring in two strong attackers. Mia Tapko, a 6’0 freshman from Overland Park, KS and Megan Coon, a 5’9 freshman from Kansas City, MO. Both young ladies bring great energy and a deep commitment to their faith.

With the loss of senior captain, Kennedy Wilson, due to graduation the team will now be leaning on the leadership of junior Grace Shurts and sophomore Elise Corbett as they gear up so share the captain duties. Both individuals bring the experience of playing at a high level, a great work ethic and that competitive drive that should help play a vital part to continue their success.

Sophomores Brenna McNellis and Grace Walker will be the spark of the team when it comes to the Lady Thunder offense. Two very aggressive middle hitters, who bring quickness to the squad and will be used greatly over the course of the season. Other players that will be a big part of this upcoming season will be freshman Roni Harris, who last season played the libero, will now switch to outside hitter. Harris brings power as well as experience. Sliding into the libero position then will be fellow freshman Danika Sinclair. An extremely hard worker, Sinclair worked to improve her skills during the off-season, and it has definitely showed.

“Our expectation is always to be in the top of the region and to make it to the National Tournament, this year is no different. We are ready to put in the work to get there.” commented Sanders.
