Lady Thunder Advance To Final Four

Manhattan, Kan.

Thunder Volleyball is leaving it all on the court at the NCCAA National Tournament. In the first time since 2013, Manhattan Christian is heading back to the final four, the fourth appearance for head coach Lauren Sanders.

“It is an amazing feeling to be in the Final Four! This team has shown so much heart over the past few days. They truly are leaving it all on the court and playing great volleyball,” commented Sanders

Opening play Thursday afternoon against #7 Johnson University (FL), Manhattan Christian pulled off the 3-0 win (25-19, 25-22, 25-22). Friday morning saw a tough battle with #6 Pensacola Christian College. PCC took the first set 27-25 but MCC was not giving up. Seeing themselves down early in the second set, the Thunder fought their way to take the set as well as steamrolling their way over the Eagles in the third (25-23, 25-12). Too many errors for the Thunder in the fourth, set up a 5th set between the two teams. Getting up 5-9 early in the fifth set, the Thunder only allowed the Eagles to score 3 more points, winning the match 15-8.

In a Southwest Region match up with #3 Dallas Christian College, a squad who Manhattan had beat twice during the regular season, would prove to be another tough competition of pool B. Dallas took a commanding set one, 25-12. A back-and-forth second set saw MCC prevail, 25-22 and from there never looked back. With a total of 43 kills in the last three sets, the Thunder dominated the attack over the Crusaders ending the game with 52 kills to their 32. Manhattan took the final two sets 25-13 and 25-12.

“Our offense put on a show tonight but wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible defense from the back row! It was an all out battle and it was beautiful to watch our plays coming together,” said Coach Sanders.

MCC finished up pool play 3-0, setting up an 11:30am CT Final Four match up against #1 overall seed Bob Jones University, who ended their pool play 2-1. If the Lady Thunder win, the Championship game will take place at 4:00pm CT.

National Bound For Thunder Volleyball

Manhattan, Kan.

The field of eight has finally been announced for the upcoming 2021-22 NCCAA DII Volleyball National Championships taking place in Kissimmee, Florida November 18-20. Head coach Lauren Sanders and the Lady Thunder found out that they had been selected as an at-large bid. Earning the #2 overall seed gives them the top spot in pool B, with #3 Dallas Christian, #6 Pensacola Christian College and #7 Johnson University (Florida).

“We had a great season, with solid wins over NAIA teams and teams within our region, giving us a high-power rating, which turned into the #2 overall seed. We are pleased with this spot, but know the target is on us. We are excited to be back at Nationals and continue working towards our goal of a National Championship,” stated Coach Sanders.

MCC will open up pool play, Thursday November 18, at 1:00 pm EST against the host #7 Johnson University Florida. Pool play will continue on Friday where the Lady Thunder will see two Region Champion teams; first #6 Pensacola Christian, winners of the South Region and then will end pool play against the Southwest Region Champions, #3 Dallas Christian College.

Coach Sanders has this to say about the pool team play, “We are excited for our pool, playing Johnson FL and Pensacola first, two teams we have not played. Johnson Is very scrappy on defense and Pensacola has a balance offense. A rematch with Dallas will be exciting but will be the third time playing them this season, they are playing great volleyball! We know one thing that at Nationals, anything can happen! We will take it one match at a time and will need to play our best volleyball during each match to advance out of pool play!”

The top two teams with the best record at the end of pool play will then move on to the Semifinal games on Saturday, November 20 at 10:00 am EST. The Championship match will be at 5:00 pm EST.

Pool A team consisted of at-large bid and #1 overall seed Bob Jones University, as well as Mideast Region Champion #4 Johnson University (Tennessee), #5 Faith Baptist Bible College who received an at-large bid and finally #8 Maranatha Baptist University, winners of the North Region.

While down in Florida, the student-athletes will all participate in caring for at-risk kids, prison inmates and the homeless. Along with that they will be donating toys and socks for kids and adults. For more information check out the NCCAA Website.

All games will be streamed live on the NCCAA Network, as well as live stats.

The Manhattan Christian Thunder Volleyball team are continuing to put together solid performances on the court. This past week in the Midwest Christian College Conference Tournament, the Thunder walked away as the Conference Champion, taking down both Calvary University and Ozark Christian College.

“We played well as a team this weekend. Calvary and Ozark both played very well against us and challenged us. Our defense really stepped up took control of the matches. On the offensive side, all our hitters had solid play throughout the tournament. Grace Walker and Brenna McNellis were unstoppable in the middle. Walker finished with 25 kills and a .430 attacking percentage and McNellis also with 25 kills and a .333 attacking percentage. This is the continued play that we need heading into the Regional Tournament,” commented Coach Lauren Sanders.

Along with some hardware, MCC had six players awarded to the MCCC All-Conference Team. Sophomore’s Roni Harris, Grace Walker and Danika Sinclair all received second team honors. Junior Elise Corbett and senior Grace Shurts were named to the first team and finally junior Brenna McNellis was named the MVP.
