Thunder Look to Build on Successful Season

Manhattan, Kan.

The Thunder women's basketball team took a major step forward this season under first year head coach Dalton Miller. Just over a year ago, the athletic department decided to cancel the second half the women's basketball team's season. They finished 0-7. Miller had the task of putting together a team to compete on the court and he did just that. The Thunder would win 13 games, the most since the 2017-18 season and more than the last three seasons combined, and play in the NCCAA Central Region Tournament Championship game.

The Thunder were led in scoring and rebounding by junior, forward, Nekayla Williams who averaged 14.3 points and 8.1 rebounds in 22.4 minutes per game. Williams would also be named to the Midwest Christian College Conference second team and Central Region first team. Freshman, guard, Macayla Hines would do a little bit of everything for the Thunder as she averaged 10.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 2.2 steals in 31.5 minutes per game. Hines would also make both conference and region teams earning honorable mention and second team honors, respectively. The final student-athlete to earn honors was freshman, guard, Elayna Wegner who earned region honorable mention honors. Wegner averaged 8.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.6 steals in 30.4 minutes per game on the season. Senior, forward Karlee Wahlmeier would lead the team in field goal percentage shooting 50.8% from the field, to go along with 3.5 points and 2.6 rebounds. Freshman, guard, Austyn Cox would lead the team in free throw percentage shooting 66.7% from the line, while averaging 6.9 points.

Miller had this to say about his team's season, "There are so many positives to take away from this season. It all started with Karlee Walhmeier and Madison Ellis making the decision to return. This program needed commitment and those two lead the charge with that. Add in our transfer, Nekayla Williams, to the mix to take on a major scoring role, surrounded by freshmen who are going to be forced to grow up with every opportunity on the floor. I could name all nine players on the roster and list every way they each impacted this team on the floor. Not only were we a young team, we were a brand new team trying to figure out where each piece fit. It was challenging, but they overcame each challenge and learned how to win together. They bought in, they believed that every time we step on the floor we can find a way to win. This season made us tougher, I'm extremely proud of what we accomplished in such a short time together, and I cannot wait to continue to build on the success we saw this season."

We want to thank all of the fans, students, faculty and staff for supporting our volleyball team this season! We look forward to next season. Roll Thunder!
