Recap: No. 9 Thunder Women's Basketball Stumble in MCCC Tournament Championship

Belton, Mo.

The #9 ranked Thunder women's basketball team started postseason play at the Midwest Christian College Conference Tournament on Friday afternoon. The Thunder would be the two seed and earn a bye into the semifinal round. The winner of the three seed and six seed would be who the Thunder would play, and the three seeded Ozark Christian College Ambassadors would be that opponent. The Thunder dropped two close games to the Ambassadors in the regular season. They lost both games by a combined five points. On Friday afternoon, the Thunder would jump all over the #7 ranked Ambassadors and never look back. The Thunder would jump out to a 12-0 lead and take a 22-6 lead after one quarter. The Ambassadors would win the next two quarters, but the first quarter deficit would be too much to overcome and the Thunder would defeat the Ambassadors, 62-49, to advance to the MCCC Tournament Final for the first time since the 2017-18 season. Freshman, Mackenzie Lovett would have a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while redshirt-junior, Nekayla Williams would have 14 points, eights rebounds, and two blocks. The Thunder would shoot 41.9% from the field, 31.8% from the three-point line, and 33.3% from the free throw line and hold the Ambassadors to 25.8% shooting from the field and 14.3% shooting from three.

The Thunder would then play the winner of the other semifinal between one seed Calvary and the five seed Central Christian College of the Bible where the Warriors of Calvary would be victorious. The Thunder and Warriors would split in the regular season and each team would win on their home floor. The Thunder would be in a tight game after one quarter only trailing 13-12. At the half, the Thunder would trail by eight with 20 minutes left in the game. The Warriors would take command in the second half outscoring the Thunder 38-22 to secure the tournament championship. Lovett would have 13 points, seven rebounds, and four assists, while sophomore, Macayla Hines would have 10 points and two steals on the afternoon. The Thunder would shoot 30.3% from the field, 10.0% from the three-point line, and 66.7% from the free throw line. The Thunder's overall record now sits at 15-13.

The Thunder will now compete in the NCCAA Central Region Tournament on Thursday, February 26th as the three seed and they will play the two seed Calvary University Warriors. This tournament will be hosted at Manhattan Christian College. This semifinal game will tip at 4:00PM.
