Recap: #4 Men's Basketball Falls in Regular Season Finale to #6 Spurgeon

Manhattan, Kan.

The Thunder men's basketball team played their regular season finale at home in a top-10, NCCAA Central Region matchup with the #6 ranked Spurgeon College Knights on Tuesday afternoon. The Thunder would come out hot, but falter and then battle back but would ultimately fall to the Knights by a score of 97-92. A 5-0 run to start the game would force an early Spurgeon timeout. The Thunder would force another Spurgeon timeout with 15:50 left in the half with the Thunder leading 13-11. A 16-0 Spurgeon run would set the tone for the rest of the half as the Thunder would only get it down to 10 before the Knights took a 62-42 lead into the half. The Knights would lead by as much as 21 early in the second half before the Thunder cut the lead to single digits with 15:12 left in the game. The Thunder would battle back to make it a one point game at two different times with under four minutes to play. Timely free throws for the Knights would close out the game and the Thunder would fall at home. With the defeat, the Thunder finish the regular season with a 19-10 record and a 9-1 record in the NCCAA Central Region.

The Thunder would shoot 46.4% from the field, 15.4% from the three-point line, and 65.0% from the free throw line. Three Thunder players would score 20 or more points, led by sophomore, Davis Rokey who had a double-double with 25 points, 13 rebounds, and two blocks. Micah Lovett would have 22 points on 7-14 shooting, to go along with four rebounds, five assists, and two steals, while Xavier Lucas had a double-double of his own with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Redshirt sophomore, Jordan Carter would also chip in with 10 points.

The Thunder will begin postseason play later this week when they host the Midwest Christian College Conference Tournament. They will play on Friday, February 21st at 8:00 PM against the winner of the 4/5 matchup at Howie's Activity Center.
